The ability of steam to rapidly and safely disinfect surfaces and kill bacteria and fungi is confirmed using the ATP contamination monitoring system. ATP stands for adenosine triphosphate and is present in all cellular material. The cells use ATP to generate energy. Therefore, measuring the amounts of ATP on surfaces is a good indicator of the microscopic, and sometimes invisible level of mould, mildew or bacterial contamination. Readings <45 suggest a clean surface. Readings greater than 100 are unacceptable.
