Could Iodine Nasal & Oral Antiseptics Help Protect You Against SARS-CoV-2?

Uncategorized Jul 20, 2020

Hello and good evening. My name is Dr. Cameron Jones and I'm an environmental microbiologist. Now, this is actually the second recording because the first one that I did a few minutes ago, there's something wrong with the audio. In any case, there's nothing worse than a Livestream with poor audio. So I am repeating the Livestream and what I'm going to be focusing on today really emerged because every week I have to go through the research literature, I'm looking for interesting facts in the research literature to bring to your attention. And obviously the focus of The Mould Show is on fungal biology and its impact on health. But increasingly with the COVID-19 pandemic, I'm certainly very aware of the importance of infection control and the various different publications that are out there that are focusing on practical infection control interventions. And so I want to bring to your attention something called: Could Iodine Nasal and Oral Antiseptics Help Protect You Against...

Evidence for the Association Between Multiple Chemical Sensitivity and Exposure to Mould

Uncategorized Jul 12, 2020

Good afternoon. My name's Dr. Cameron Jones and I'm an environmental microbiologist, and we're doing this live stream from my office. We are currently in Melbourne Australia, and we are undergoing our second lockdown. In any case, I hope everyone's keeping safe. I hope you're all wearing masks. Today, however, we're going to take a break from discussing the infection control issues surrounding SARS-CoV-2, and we're going to revert to mould and water damage.

And specifically, in today's show, I wanted to take a very close look at a range of symptoms and exposure issues that can occur inside water damaged buildings, which can be defined as multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS). The reason I want to focus on this, is that I increasingly come upon clients who have been exposed to water damaged buildings, and they describe a constellation of symptoms which are well described by multiple chemical sensitivity. So I've gone into the research literature and I found not one, but two papers...

Surface Testing for COVID Can Reveal Pre-Symptomatic and Asymptomatic Hotspots

Uncategorized Jul 06, 2020

Hello, my name is Dr. Cameron Jones, and I'm an Environmental Microbiologist, and today, I've got a very important show on. The reason for this is because obviously, all of us are being affected by the coronavirus, and our laboratory is certainly undertaking whatever we can do to help with coronavirus identification, especially of sites that may harbor COVID-19 cases. How are we doing that? Well, I'm going to explain to you. Over the last couple of weeks, I've been talking a lot about surface contamination.

Obviously, all of you would be familiar with the concept of clinical testing, that is the nose or throat swab collection, to determine whether or not you are presymptomatic, asymptomatic, or actually have symptoms of COVID-19, but what about the level of environmental contamination? That's what we're going to be focusing on today.

I'm going to be reviewing what certainly I and my lab has learnt about this over the last couple of weeks and months, and I'm going to be reviewing two...

Look How Easy It Is To Detect The Coronavirus On Surfaces At A Shopping Centre

Uncategorized Jun 27, 2020

Good afternoon. My name is Dr. Cameron Jones, and I'm an environmental microbiologist. And this week, we have a very interesting and important show. Obviously, for those who tune in every week, you know that we focus on various different aspects of public health and environmental health surveillance. And this week, we're going to be focusing on how you can go about testing your environment for the presence or absence of the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

And I've just checked on my phone, what the statistics are for Australia today. And the total number of cases is 37, with 30 new cases recorded here in Victoria. So this is very unfortunate news. Certainly, countries like Australia and New Zealand have been showing a very good response in terms of flattening the curve. And so today's show is really all about one aspect of this coronavirus pandemic. And that is, what is the level of the virus, the coronavirus out in public, especially on high hand-touch surfaces.

And so, the topic of today's...

If You're Older and Prone to Asthma Watch This

Good afternoon. My name is Dr Cameron Jones and I'm an environmental microbiologist. This week I have a very interesting show, which has evolved really from the last couple of inspections I've done in the last few weeks, but before I go any further, I want to give you a bit of an overview because this is actually a birthday show. I've been doing these live streams every week now, and a whole year has gone by. That's right, 52 live streams.

As many of you know who have been following the live stream on Facebook, we turned a lot of them into podcasts. So, I just wanted to say that I've enjoyed presenting these live streams and developing the podcasts out overwhelmingly focusing on indoor air quality and mould. Certainly, in the last couple of months, we've been looking at other areas of infection control and yes, SARS-CoV-2 to has taken up a lot of time, but this is because it is highly topical. It is related to the indoor living environment. There have been lots to say about this. So...

Some Tips On What You Should Do If You Discover Mould On Your Framing Timbers During New Home Construction

Uncategorized Jun 23, 2020

Good afternoon, everyone. My name is Dr. Cameron Jones and I'm an environmental microbiologist. Now, I apologize for the delay in getting to this week's live stream for The Mould Show, but I want to talk about something very important, especially in Australia, as we are moving into winter.

We get calls very often talking about water damage to new home construction. And I started my morning this morning, bright and early, going to a pair of townhouses that have been water damaged and the owners of the townhouses, not very happy because mould started appearing on a lot of the framing timbers. And so I want to talk to you today about this important topic and essentially what we're going to be focusing on is what do you do about this when you discover mould growing on these framing timbers? Do you just hope for the best? Do you hope it's going to go away or do you do something about it?

And certainly as an environmental microbiologist, we're always concerned when customers call up or...

Five Facts About Fungi You Could Have Missed Because Of All The Recent Attention On COVID

Uncategorized Jun 07, 2020

Hello, and welcome to this week's edition of The Mould Show. My name's Dr. Cameron Jones and I'm an environmental microbiologist. And certainly for the last couple of months, all of us have been preoccupied with the COVID-19 pandemic. But because I'm an environmental microbiologist, today I'm going to be getting back to talking about fungi. And in fact, I'm going to be talking about five aspects of fungi and why they are such a significant threat to us from an infection and allergy point of view, but also in terms of their impact on crops and food security. And I'm going to be going through some of the reasons why fungi are considerably neglected. And certainly, as we've seen with the COVID-19 pandemic, people are talking about the fact that humanity and policymakers were very much underprepared for this significant threat. I would argue that scientists are significantly underprepared for the impact that fungi have on society and on public health and so that is going to be the focus...

3 New Facts About SARS-CoV-2 on Surfaces and Fomite Transmission

Uncategorized May 31, 2020

Hello, my name's Dr. Cameron Jones, and welcome to this week's live stream.

Now, I guess all of you are getting used to using some type of hand sanitizer when you go out? This is to protect us from coming into contact with other people or environments and to reduce the chance of the coronavirus replicating onto our hands and persisting on our hands, and then transferring them onto our face or onto our mucus membrane, or to other objects within our homes or workplaces where other people could come into contact with them. And so, today I wanted to talk to you about three new facts about fomites that you really need to know, and I've titled it COVID Fomites. Realistically it is coming into contact with the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which causes COVID-19.

In any case, what I want to talk about today is these three new facts. And essentially I want to talk about a paper which really talked about and put this into perspective very, very clearly. And this is talking about the transmission of the...

The COVID Safe Workplace and How to Validate Your Cleaning Effectiveness

Uncategorized May 17, 2020

Good afternoon. My name is Dr. Cameron Jones, and I'm an environmental microbiologist. And on this week's live stream, I'm bringing to you what I think is a very important topic, because for all of us doing social easing or quarantine, it's about to change. We're going to go into something called a ‘new normal’. And as businesses are being encouraged to reopen slowly, there's something called COVID safe workplaces, that we need to take into consideration.

And I want to discuss this topic about how all of us need to be mindful as we re-enter the workplace and the workforce. And so that is the topic of today's live stream. And essentially I want to focus on one particular aspect of how businesses need to start thinking about validating themselves. And double checking that their cleaning regimes and protocols are actually disinfecting the air and surfaces, as best they can, so that all of us reduce the risks that go on when we go back into these workplaces.

And because at...

COVID Toes, loss of smell and preview of our survey results on COVID-safe workplaces

Uncategorized May 10, 2020

Have you heard the one about the person who lost their sense of smell and was then diagnosed with COVID-19...yes it's true!

Hello, my name is Dr. Cameron Jones and thank you for tuning in to this week's live stream. I'm doing it from the lab. This is where I spend a lot of my time for a couple of reasons. Most of you who are following this live stream or turn on your TV or radio, probably are aware that at least in Australia the coronavirus restrictions are going to be relaxed to some extent. That means that sectors of the economy are going to be going back to work and we're incredibly busy working on various different aspects of this to support public health.  here's an overview of how this is going to work:

This is going to be implemented as follows:

and then the Government is asking all business owners to play their part in making their specific business and COVID safe workplace:

Therefore, my normal, quite lengthy live streams each week are going to be a little bit...
